Gardening in small spaces

Would you like to grow at home but think that your balcony or patio is not enough? Then we might have a solution for you!

Growing your own vegetables and herbs is an easy way to support a more sustainable lifestyle. It's also a perfect way to stretch your wallet. And regardless of whether you have a balcony or a small patio, it is possible to maximize the area for successful cultivation.

While attaching anything to your balcony is not allowed, as it can pose a fire risk, there are lots of ways you can grow – such as adding a few freestanding pots and planters. Here’s a few suggestions for you…

Grow upwards!

It’s a good idea to try and grow on multiple levels. Depending on what you choose to grow, this could give your plants a chance for more light.

Free standing units such as the HYLLIS from IKEA are ideal for stacking plants, and they can look great on your patio. They also make an excellent place to store your garden tools.

If you supplement with HYLLIS covers, you can create a mini greenhouse into the bargain. In addition, the cover can protect your pots from the elements during the colder months.

If you want to try and maximize the sun's rays on your plants, then why not consider a roller cart. This means, you can also bring in your herbs and tomato plants if it gets too hot.

IKEA’s RÅSKOG is an example of a trolley that is perfect for your herbs as well as garden tools. It also takes up very little space.

Green at lower levels

In addition to growing at height, you can of-course also use the lower levels. Then the traditional flower box is a good choice.

Flower boxes hold a lot and you can always choose to place a couple of the boxes on top of each other for staged cultivation, such as here with the flower box STJÄRNANIS from IKEA. Here you can get space to grow, for example, lettuce, mini cucumbers or why not carrots? Just try it out!

Grow together!

Last but not least, we want to make sure that you also grow together with your neighbours.

Within our developments, we always strive to have a community hub, often with planters available, to be used by our purchsers. If you live in a BoKlok home, get in touch with your management company to find out more!

Or, why not start up a growing party/chat and take the opportunity to exchange tips and plants with each other. Good luck!
